In July of 2007, CCWF, in conjunction with Morro Bay Commercial Fishermen’s Organization, was pleased to sponsor the first annual “Kids at Sea” educational fishing trip. Kudos to MBCFO secretary and CCWF member Michele Leary for her wonderful idea. This trip was the beginning of a program for kids to go fishing for free and learn about boating safety, the Morro Bay estuary environment and about the working waterfront’s present and past. The trips are run by captain Michele Leary on her 50 foot sport fishing boat, the “Rita G”. The vessel was named after her late grandmother, Rita Gartrell, who operated sport fishing boats out of Morro Bay for several years. The trips are about 4 hours long and begin with a short seminar and bay cruise. Then it’s out to sea for some fun fishing where the volunteers help the kids with baiting hooks and handling fish. Michele has lunch and snacks for the kids and at the end of the trip their fish are filleted and she has a surprise for each to take home along with their catch. This is all free for the kids, thanks largely to the Central Coast Joint/Cable Liaison Committee for its generous funding. Michele also organizes a big fundraiser in Morro Bay in the Spring and the wonderful community comes out to support it. These trips have become very popular and Michele plans to schedule Kids at Sea trips as often as possible during the fishing season which is May through November.
